PLAGIARISM & ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: HOME

THE SCHOLARLY CONVERSATION

AUTHORS

Mette Bechmann & Joshua Kragh Bruhn

INTRODUCTION

Observance of the general rules of referencing when dealing with somebody else´s work, and mastery of practical referencing skills are not only a question of personal morality but are also essential elements in the overall makeup of academic practice.

Academic production rarely exists in isolation but is engaged in ongoing interaction with other agents in the field, in a conversation where arguments are mirrored in, challenged by, and developed in collaboration with peers and in an agreed-upon and orderly manner. This interaction, or conversation, manifests itself in the citations and references that are distinctive features of the particular genre known as academic literature.

In this guide, we set out to prepare you for the academic conversation and help you avoid the pitfalls of plagiarism by setting forth the basic principles of good academic conduct and pointing to relevant resources that support this task.
