Shortcuts and starting points from the Bloomberg Basics webinars
Functions vs. Securities – What’s the Difference?
Functions → Pre-built Bloomberg tools that analyze, screen, and visualize market data (for example, {GP } for graphs).
Securities → Specific financial instruments like stocks, bonds, or FX pairs that functions analyze. (for example, {AAPL US Equity} for Apple stock, {EURUSD} for the EUR/USD exchange rate) First, load a security {TSLA US Equity}, then run a function ({FA } for financials).
How to interact with functions and securities
The command line is at the top of every Bloomberg screen. The entire system is discoverable from the command line. As the name suggests, the command line is where you enter commands to drive the system, but it is also a search bar to find exactly what you need.
The menus provide a way to browse the full breadth and depth of Bloomberg's offerings to find what you need. All Bloomberg functions are organized onto menus, which start with overall market analysis and allow you to drill down to security-specific analysis.
