CBS Library is happy to be able to offer all CBS students and staff free access to Citavi until June 2018. Citavi is a reference management software of a relatively high degree of complexity compared to similar tools.

Its focus is very much on the pre-writing phase: e.g., it allows you to structure a research paper, to add quotes and references to individual parts of the papers, and to export everything to MS Word when you are ready to embark on the actual writing process.

There are plenty of tools that use the reference management aspect as launch pad. All of these pretty much do the same job (metadata import from content databases, in-text citations, and bibliographies) but often differ in terms of usability and functionality. Citavi´s strength lies in its ability to structure and work with text whereas Mendeley, which we took out a license for in January, is user-friendly, works across browsers and devices (PC, Mac, tablet, and smart phone), and supports collaboration. Both boast built-in PDF readers.

CBS Library believes that Citavi is a robust and interesting alternative to traditional RM tools and for that reason, we have decided to offer all CBS students and staff a one-year free trial. If, after June 2018, you have grown to depend on the software, you can purchase a personal account at half price (€ 50). This is a one-off investment and not a subscription.

Citavi is currently only available for Windows and only as a standalone software without a parallel online universe. An online Mac-compatible version is expected end of 2017/ beginning of 2018.
